The English word rose is derived from French, which originally is borrowed from Latin Rosa. Belonging to the genus Rosa, roses are very popular ornamental plants that are grown outdoors as well as indoors. The following is a description of the subgenera and sections of the genus Rosa.

Subgenera of the Genus Rosa

Genus Rosa has been categorized into 4 subgenera namely, Hulthemia, Platyrhodon, Hesperhodos, and Rosa. The first three subgenera have one or two species in the category while Rosa contains 11 sections.

Hulthemia

It was earlier called Simplicifoliae, which means having single leaves. This subgenus comprises two species from southwest Asia – Rosa persica and Rosa berberifolia. The latter is also known as Rosa persica var.berberifolia (a variation of Rosa persica).

Rosa persica originally belongs to the steppes and deserts of Afghanistan, Iran, Western Siberia and Central Asia. It is notable for having a single leaf and lack of stipules. Though it is difficult to grow in gardens, it grows as a weed with deep roots.

These Types of Roses are the only ones that do not have stipules and compound leaves.

Platyrhodon

The word platyrhodon is derived from the Greek, which indicates flaky rose. Just one species fall in this subgenus and it is called Rosa roxburghii. It is native to East Asia.

R. roxburghii grows as a shrub and its stem is woody. The bark has the tendency to peel. It can reach a height of 5m when mature. The thorns are few in number and appear in pairs at the bases of the leaves.

This species has been named after the superintendent of the Calcutta Botanic Garden, William Roxburghii.

Hesperrhodos

Derived from the Greek, this term means western rose. This subgenus carries two species and both of them are native to North America. They are namely, Rosa stellata and Rosa minutifolia.

R. minutifolia is commonly referred to as Baja rose and also as small-leafed rose. Native to San Diego (California) and Baja (California), it grows as a very thick shrub and is very spiny. The flowers are normally bright-pink colored with hordes of prickles found on the undersides.

Having common names such as the desert rose and star rose, R. satellite can be found growing on rocky surfaces in Texas. In New Mexico and Arizona, they grow in the canyons. These Types of Roses can be grown effortlessly as ground cover. With trifoliate leaves, rich purple flowers bloom during the summer.
